Choosing a colour for your new or existing home can be somewhat of a challenge for most people. And let’s face it, choosing a colour for your own home is much harder than choosing one for a design client or a friend. So how do you take the stress and guess work out of finding that right colour palette? One great way is to start with something that inspires you, something that you are naturally drawn to. That something can come from many places. Perhaps it’s a fabric that you fell in love with, or a painting that speaks to you every time that you see it. Or simply a beautiful photograph. The places from which you can take inspiration are truly endless.
The next step. Try to see as many colours as you can in your chosen piece. Chances are it has at least three different tones, colours, and hues that meld together to make your heart sing. Let these three colours guide you in choosing the perfect paint. Now ask yourself which of these three colours would suit as an overall backdrop, which colour could be a feature wall, and which would be the perfect accent colour? Now you can head to the paint store and grab the 3 paint chips that match the colours that you picked. Sit with your choices for a few days and if they still speak to you after that – take the plunge and paint away!
Trusting your own inner designer may take some practice but with time you’ll trust yourself and your choices.
